Back To School – With Allergies and Asthma

If your child has allergies or asthma, you are likely already in the routine of standard checkups, action plans and rescue medications. As our kids go back to school this Fall – whether it be a sweet kindergartner hitting the halls of academia for the first time, or the seasoned student attending college – a visit with an allergist is smart, and a smart practice to ingrain as a habit for your young one. While some allergies and asthma resolve themselves as we get older – other problems can stick around – and it’s better safe than sorry.

The most common problems for younger kids are asthma and food allergies. Both of these things are extremely serious and must be routinely checked on, and measured.  And – with both of these conditions – an action plan is necessary, complete with what do do scenarios and pre-prescribed medications to accommodate those steps.  Also, in both conditions – management and prevention is key, and very successful with the help of your allergist and education of the parents, educators and kids. The school systems here in Dallas are very aware of these issues and are highly trained to work with parents and kids to meet the individual needs of the students.

An interesting part of being an allergist, is seeing that some conditions come and go. For example, some conditions as mentioned above are outgrown, but others can pop up unexpectedly. We have seen patients outgrow asthma completely by teenage years, only to see it come back in early twenties. Similarly, we’ve seen patients who were relatively allergy-free their entire life, develop a medication or food allergy quite suddenly, with violent reactions.  This is why it’s recommended that a routine check up, by your allergist is key in preventing and being prepared for these sudden onset allergic reactions or recurrent asthma situations.

What are you waiting for? Schedule your routine checkup to be better prepared for this school year, and again each year to come for optimal health and allergy management.
